In The Belly! Imbolc Celebrations w/ Thorn Wych, Dawn Terry & Slug Milk
Imbolc becons. Halfway between Winter solstice and Sprint equinox, when the sheep begin to lactate, udders fill and the grass begins to grow.
We mark the date with a hopefull reverence, summoning Spring blessings with an evening of elemental folk magic, drawing together song, ritual and vegetable as an offering to St Brigid.
With performances from:
Thorn Wych
Thorn Wych is a musician based in Lancashire, England, who crafts her own instruments from native UK tree branches.
Her pieces feature bowed string instruments, flutes and percussion, which she manipulates through pitch-bending glitches and delay pedals to create music that evokes memories of a world existing beyond the boundaries of the material realm. She released her debut album 'Aesthesis' last year, with Foxy Digitalis noting that: “Distorted drones undulate beneath entrancing incantations as though primeval spells are being conjured and future pathways moulded.”
Dawn Terry
Dawn Terry is a woman in thrall to the drone. producing work that is heavy, dreamlike, open and hypnotic. Working for years as one third of drone band Bong, Dawn supplied heavy distorted bass and vocals.
In her more recent solo work Dawn has turned towards acoustic resonances provided by accordion, hurdy-gurdy and voice. Both cleaner and denser than ever before, Dawn is now producing large scale minimalist landscapes characterised by an austere openness, barely punctured by hypnotic drumming or slowly intoned vocals.
Slug Milk
Sheffield’s premier done-pych folk ensemble summoning sounds from the medieval Bog. A Slug Milk performance has to be experienced to be believed.
