Accessibility at Chapel Walk

The building is old and has some limitations, so we’ve tried to give as much information as possible about what it’s like to visit our space. Summary of the Space
The front entrance has a sloped ramp with a gradient of 8.2%, the ramp is 240cm long and 92cm wide at its narrowest point. The width of the entrance door is 91cm.
If requested before arrival, someone from the Gut Level team can meet people arriving at the space.
Before entering, you’ll be greeted by a Gut Level team member checking memberships.
There is a wheelchair accessible toilet on the ground floor located towards the back left of the room, a set of 3 toilet cubicles on the first floor, along with another room for urinals. All our toilets are gender neutral, if anyone attempts to police what toilet you use in regards to gender, please let a member of staff know and it will be dealt with accordingly.
The first floor can only be accessed by stairs, there are 20 steps leading up to the first floor, the width of the staircase is 120cm. On the first floor there are the additional toilet cubicles, plus the outdoor terrace which will be in use until 11pm.
There is an outdoor area on the ground floor which is accessed by 3 steps
Gut Level’s Safer Space Angels are around at events to support safety and wellbeing, or you can speak to a member of the bar team.

By car and taxi
There is paid parking available in several car parks nearby. The closest paid car park is Arundel Gate, S1 2PN. This car park has accessible parking spaces. It is 305 feet from Gut Level across level pavement and one busy road.
The nearest parking which is free for blue badge holders is on Norfolk Street outside Victoria Hall. There are 3 spaces. These spaces are 253 feet from Gut Level across level pavement.
Cars and taxis can pick up and drop off at the bottom of Chapel Walk on Norfolk Street.
The nearest taxi rank is at the bottom of Fargate, near Boots and McDonalds.
Safer Space Angels can book taxis for anyone who needs support with this.

By tram
The closest tram stop is Cathedral (South Yorkshire Supertram) Sheffield Centre is 151 meters away, 3 min walk. This stop serves the blue and yellow route which travel via the City Centre to Halfway (blue route) and Middlewood to Meadowhall via the city centre (yellow route).
The terrain from this tram stop to the venue is varied concrete, tarmac and cobblestone. There are no major inclines but the terrain is bumpy in some areas.
Bike
There’s a bike rack located in the ground floor outdoor area at Gut Level, to use this rack, you will have to bring your bike through the main space to access it.

Entrance
Service animals are welcome in the space and we can give them water.

Chapel Walk has an uneven pavement surface and is quite narrow. There is no lighting in the street and so it can be very dark at night.
For events and club nights the gate will be open and someone from the Gut Level team will be checking tickets and memberships at the entrance.
If you are visiting and the door is locked you should ring the bell outside. The bell is located 1 m height from the floor.

Inside
Inside Gut Level there is a main room on the ground floor, a ground-floor outdoor area, and a set of stairs up to a terrace area. On the ground floor there is one wheelchair accessible all gender toilet. On the first floor there are 3 toilet cubicles separated by a full length stud wall, and a separate room for urinals. All the toilets are gender-neutral.
Main room
There are 40 chairs and 8 tables in the main room when we’re open as a bar with no club event. This furniture can all be moved around and packed away. The majority of the chairs are wooden, the seat is
At club nights there are two main permanent seating areas, these are soft topped benches. The first set is located to the left as you walk through the main entrance, the bench is a total of 315cm long, 50cm deep and 45cm height. This set of seating has a back support which is 315cm long, 42cm width and 5cm deep. The second set is located to the back right of the room in a corner formation, each individual bench is 120cm long, 50cm deep and 45cm height, there are five pushed together to create a corner seating area.
The permanent bench seating areas will be prioritised for people with accessibility needs, signage is displayed above the seats to make members aware of this.
During club events there will be less chairs in the main room to create more space, however chairs can be requested to provide alternative seating to the soft top benches.
There is a bar in the main room serving alcoholic, non-alcoholic drinks and bar snacks. The bar is at two heights. The higher part of the bar is 110cm from the ground. The lower part of the bar is 80cm from the ground.
There are plug sockets located to the left as you enter the main room from the front entrance, two sockets are 45cm from the ground and two sockets are 110cm from the ground.
There are two infra-red heaters in the room, both are placed above the permanent seating areas, it can get quite hot when these are on.
There is no induction loop.
At club nights loud music is played and there may be flashing lights, disposable foam earplugs are available for free at the bar. Free tap water is available and is located to the right of the bar as you enter the main entrance.
Ground-floor outdoor area
There are 3 steps up to the door leading to the outdoor area, each step is 110cm length, 27cm deep, 13cm height. Gut Level have a portable ramp and members of the team are happy to set this up any time it’s needed.
The door to the outdoor area is 91cm wide, it has a push bar handle which is 100cm high. The door opens outwards outside from the main area.
The ground-floor outdoor area has a decking platform which starts at the doorway, the platformed area is 117cm W (at its narrowest point) and 127cm L. There is a step from the platform to the floor that is 13cm height.
Terrace
The terrace space is not in use at all events.
There is a set of 20 stairs up to the terrace area. The stairs are 120 cm wide, 27.5cm deep and 17cm height and there is a handrail. There is a yellow and black striped lip on each step for visibility and grip assistance.
The floor of the terrace is paved with paving slabs, there are x tables and a variety of chairs available for seating. There are two large planters against the railing that overlooks Chapel Walk.
Toilets
All the toilet cubicles and urinals in our space are for all genders, if anyone attempts to police what toilet you use in regards to gender, please let a member of staff know and it will be dealt with accordingly.
There is one wheelchair accessible toilet cubicle on the ground floor, this toilet has a sink, a wall mounted hand soap dispenser, a waste bin, and a sanitary bin. The door to the wheelchair accessible toilet is 90cm wide and has a ‘SAA disabled toilet handle’. When opening the door from the main room, it opens outwards. The room is 196cm at its widest point and 150cm at its narrowest, the length of the room is 237cm.
Two of the toilet cubicles on the first floor have a door width of 59cm, the third has a door width of 74cm. The door width to the urinal room is 66cm.
None of the toilets are to Changing Places standards.
The nearest Changing Places toilet is at 55 Norfolk Street in the Crucible Theatre. This is 0.1 miles from Gut Level via Tudor Square.
There are no baby changing facilities and children are not allowed in the space. There are baby changing facilities nearby in Marks and Spencer.
Safer Spaces
Gut Level has a team of Safer Space Angels who will be around at club nights. Their role is to encourage a community that cares for each other and create an environment that is as comfortable as possible for everyone, with particular focus on the needs of marginalised groups.
They will be the key points of contact for responding to any safer space concerns or incidents, if you or anyone you’re attending the space with feels uncomfortable or unsafe, please reach out to the designated safer space person or alternatively alert another member of staff who can notify them.
